Photo Story: Nemon Williams

Nemon is a 47-year-old jewelry vendor who sets up shop along Broad Street in Philadelphia every day. He and others like him are people Philadelphians walk past almost daily, and never know anything about. This story is a closer look at an artist and merchant operating outside traditional confines. Reported as a personal project.

Nemon Williams (center), 47, sits at the base of an electrical box on Broad and Chestnut Streets in Center City, Philadelphia, on May 7, 2017. This has been his "spot" to sell handmade jewelry for the past 10 years.

Searching through his pouch of gem-stones, Williams describes how he crafts jewelry out of silverware. "I order all the stones off Amazon," he said. "I use pliers to bend the fork or spoon, sometimes I need to file it down. I add the stone and shape [the silverware] around it, then it's done."

Williams, 47, sits on the corner of Broad and Chestnut Street in Philadelphia on May 7, 2017. He averages around five sales each day, which is enough to pay his rent. "A lot of people out here, they think I'm homeless," he said. "I'm not. I do this because I love it."
